Featured Speakers: Lev Spivak-Birndorf,PHD of Psi Labs
In this month’s meeting learn how new testing requirements for Cannabis are driving the lab testing market toward more sophisticated testing dedicated to ensuring the safety of the products.
Lev Spivak-Birndorf is a research chemist who specializes in analytical biogeochemistry and more recently in a phytochemical analysis of medical cannabis. He completed a post-doctoral research fellowship in metal isotope geochemistry at Indiana University. Prior to working at Indiana University, Lev received his doctorate in geochemistry and cosmochemistry at Arizona State University where he studied the trace element chemistry of rare meteorites to help understand the geologic history of the young solar system. Lev is currently the lab director and a founding partner of PSI Labs, a state licensed safety compliance facility located in Ann Arbor, MI.
PSI Labs mission is to develop and implement rigorous testing protocols to help ensure the safety, consistency, and efficacy of medical cannabis products for the patients of Michigan.
Evolution of the MI cannabis testing landscape: Changes from an unregulated to a regulated commercial cannabis market from the perspective of laboratory testing.
The transition of Michigan’s well developed, but unregulated, commercial cannabis market to a state-regulated market is bringing numerous changes for the industry in the state. Cannabis testing is a sector of the industry that has experienced substantial change over this transition and will be likely to evolve over the coming years as the industry matures. Prior to the implementation of the new regulations, testing has been entirely voluntary with a heavy emphasis on the efficacy of the products. New testing requirements are driving the lab testing market toward more sophisticated testing dedicated to ensuring the safety of the products. Labs now test cannabis products for the presence of chemical residues, heavy metals and microbiological contaminants that could potentially be harmful to patients.
